Neurodivergence and Career Progression
These barriers may include:
◼️ Neurotypical assumptions about what talent progression should look like
◼️ Navigating the unwritten rules of the workplace
◼️ Unconscious bias related to the way neurodivergent workers may present themselves or communicate
◼️ Difficulty conceptualizing what the future looks like and forward planning
◼️ Failure of the employer/manger to implement appropriate accommodations and support
◼️ Lack of organisation training and awareness on Neurodiversity from a strengths based and neuro-affirming approach
◼️ Internalised ableism or difficulty accepting feedback due to challenges with Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD)
◼️ Lack of part-time roles available in leadership positions
A reminder not to fall into the comparison trap as there is not a one size fits all approach to career progression and how we measure success. The true onus is on organisations to create an inclusive workplace by breaking down these barriers and creating an environment where neurodivergent workers can thrive. If employers fail to adapt, then they are limiting the opportunities for neurodivergent employees to advance in their careers and cause employers to lose out on skilled and qualified talent..
Actionable steps that employers can consider include:
🌻 Build organisational capacity by implementing company-wide neurodiversity awareness training and how it benefits the workplace;
🌻 Provide alternatives to the traditional hiring process;
🌻 Ensure all employees have access to reasonable adjustments, accommodation and supports;
🌻 Implement a people-first management style;
🌻 Create a sense of community for those who are neurodivergent
create safe places via internal neurodiversity resource groups
