Object Permanence in the Workplace
Object permanence in the workplace: Out of Sight...Out of Mind
Does this resonate with you?
Object permanence is the understanding that objects continue to exist even when they are not visible. This is a fundamental cognitive skill that develops in childhood, however, it can be a challenge for neurodivergent folk in certain situations, such as the workplace. Think of the phrase "out of sight, out of mind", for some employees with ADHD this concept is a strong reality. This means that if something is not visible, they may have difficulty visualising and remembering that the item or task exists. This can be particularly challenging in the workplace. Difficulties with object permanence may lead to challenges with:
- Forgetfulness (i.e. forgetting about important tasks or deadlines or missing meetings or appointments)
- Disorganisation (difficulty locating paperwork or objects such as tools or resources)
- Retaining information
- Maintaining focus and concentration
- Keeping items organised in your workspace
- Difficulty prioritising tasks and planning ahead
- Remembering to take medications
There are a number of strategies that may help with object permanence in the workplace which include:
Communication: Ensure a regular communication strategy in place to keep employees informed about changes in projects and deadlines. Provide regular feedback so employees know how they are progressing and to help keep on track
Time Management Techniques: Use techniques such as Pomodoro, utilise technology such as your calendar, colour coding, setting reminders, using notifications, prompts and alarms
Rewards: Consider what motivates you and treat yourself to the reward when you finish a task such as having a fresh-air break or treating yourself to a coffee
Visual aids: Visual aids, such as charts, timelines, sticky notes and lists may help to visualise tasks and stay on track. Mark emails with flags or change back to "unread" if it requires further action
Break down large tasks into smaller ones: This can make tasks seem less daunting and help employees stay focused
Encourage collaboration: Collaboration can help employees feel connected to their work and to each other. The body doubling technique may also be effective (doing a task with another person present to help maintain focus and accountability)
