Autistic Assumptions
Many people's idea of what autism "supposedly" is has come from outdated portrayals in the media and is not neuro-affirming. Unfortunately, this only further perpetuates the misconceptions and stereotyping that exist.
The iceberg analogy (or theory) suggests that the visible signs we typically associate with autism are just the tip of the iceberg and often below the surface are numerous other hidden aspects.
The iceberg analogy encourages us to reframe our understanding of autism and to confront our own unconscious biases. It's also a helpful visual reminder that each individual's experience is unique, and that autism is not a monolith. Autism is a spectrum of abilities and differences.
It's time we push beyond our assumptions and support our autistic peers by appreciating the complexity of the condition and ensuring support is tailored to each individual’s needs. By recognising the full depth and complexity of autism, we can foster a more inclusive and understanding environment for all. Let's work together to celebrate neurodiversity and empower autistic individuals to thrive.
